As I write this I am surrounded by teenagers at All Saint's Anglican Church in Bakersfield, staying awake all night during a "lock in". This is the opening salvo of ministry, anticipating the busy ministry season of Pentecost. In the month of May this year, we complete our celebration of Easter, rejoicing in the Resurrection of our Lord, anticipating our own, and now we look deeper at what to do with such a gift. While the season of Easter celebrates the birthday of our salvation, Pentecost celebrates the birthday of the Church. This birthday is all about the ministry of the Church, particularly the Great Commission. Rather than just talking about it or thinking of ministry merely as pastoral care, we are challenged to draw people to the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. Our vision as a church is to embrace people with the love of Jesus, equip them that they may have strong faith, and enable them for ministry. This is all about Pentecost. Thus it is the longest season of the Church year and at times can be the busiest as well.
This month will be particularly busy, especially in our outreach to young people, and in ministry to deepen the prayer life of men and women of our congregation. On May 3rd we have the annual Daughters of the King Spring Assembly at St. James Cathedral in Fresno. This is a valuable opportunity for the backbone of our prayer ministry, the St. Jude's Chapter of the Daughters of the King. Then, the following weekend is the opening of the latest installment of The Chronicles of Narnia. This movie is Prince Caspian and it promises to be a spectacular and mostly faithful rendering of the book by C.S. Lewis. In June we hope to take a number of young people to see this movie at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, in addition to those who would like to see the movie locally on opening night. Then, the following week, we have the annual Men's Retreat at a retreat center near Riverside, with Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi of Uganda as the featured speaker. A special concert event will be held on the last weekend of the month in San Diego at the Del Mar fairgrounds. This will be like a Christian "Woodstock" event, featuring up to 50 musical groups, called "Spirit Fest". We hope to leave for San Diego on Friday afternoon, May 23rd, spend the night at St. Anne's Church in Oceanside, attend the concert all day Saturday, and return Sunday afternoon. These are all special events that can have life-changing influence for those who participate. I hope you consider coming to at least one of them.
We will also begin our next Confirmation Class in June. With several new families joining our church, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the Anglican Reformation and the uniquely balanced spiritual life that has emerged throughout the Anglican Communion. Fr. Wes' adult curriculum for this is called "Anglican Ethos" and it will run for about twelve weeks. This course is open for everyone, even those who have already been confirmed. Fr. Wes will also offer a youth oriented confirmation class if there is sufficient interest.
All these ministry endeavors serve to help our church reach out to more people and deepen the faith of our members. This will in turn build our ministry, making the season of Pentecost all the more meaningful. Join the fun and experience a Pentecost more meaningful than ever before!
